Chaplaincy In-Service Training In June 2002, Defence Instruction (DI) (General) 47-5 entitled "Chaplaincy In-service Training Scheme" was promulgated. It allows for serving ADF members recommended by the Bishop to the Defence Force (as the Anglican member of the Religious Advisory Committee to the Services) and the Archdeacons to undertake full-time theological study at Commonwealth expense. On completion of training and ordination to the priesthood, candidates complete a curacy of not less than two years duration before appointment as a chaplain in the Permanent Forces. An ADF Chaplaincy Vocational Panel was developed along the lines of the Bathurst-Riverina-Canberra & Goulburn tri-diocesan model and has convened in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The Panel members are drawn from the Archdeacons, the Defence Force Board and suitable civilian clergy and laity. Anglican ADF Chaplaincy candidates are presently training in the Dioceses of Perth, Bunbury, Melbourne, Bendigo, Canberra & Goulburn, Bathurst, Sydney and North Queensland. All inquiries from ADF members regarding the scheme should be directed to the local area Anglican chaplains, the Director of Ordinands, the Reverend Canon Colin Aiken, and the Service Archdeacons (in that order) in the first instance. A flow chart outlining entry into the Chaplaincy In-Service Training is available here. |
